THE NUTRIENT RATING GUIDE

About the Heart-Health Rating

Learn about The Nutrient’s Heart-Health Rating and the nutrition framework behind it, including Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn’s work.

The approach behind the rating

The framework is informed by the nutrition approach presented by Caldwell B. Esselstyn Jr., MD, in Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. It emphasizes whole plant foods and avoids animal products and added oil. The Nutrient uses this framework to provide a quick, consistent recipe rating.

A whole-food, plant-based pattern without added oil is the foundation used for this rating. This is The Nutrient’s ingredient-based adaptation of the Esselstyn framework—not a substitute for the complete program or medical care.

What the rating does not measure

The rating does not calculate serving size, sodium, added sugar, calories, blood cholesterol, medication needs, disease severity or a person’s overall dietary pattern. It does not predict whether a recipe will prevent, treat or reverse cardiovascular disease.
